Designing for yourself

// 09.09.2009

From beginning to end the redesign and redevelopment of my website took 3 months. The development was a cinch, taking only about 10 hours so far (I'm still not done). However, the design process took much longer than I had expected, and I think the time is in the details.

When you have unlimited resources (time, etc.) it's so easy to get carried away nit-picking at the details when you're designing for yourself, not to mention that constant battling with yourself over everything. I was free to use whatever colors, whatever technologies and whatever techniques I wanted. But, unlike working for a client, there's no one to sign off on a design. No one to say, "Yeah, do it." So, by flop-flopping with myself I ended up with 3 major iterations before I finally pulled the trigger and hit the code.

Looking back, I wish I had set myself some deadlines. I wish I had treated myself like a client because I probably would have finished months ago. Next time, next time...
